Along all these years, Rockstar games has told tales of crime, ambition, betrayal and survival, each reflecting the era it was released in. Grand Theft Auto (1997): Crime with no Rules

The original GTA didn’t focus on a single protagonist. Instead, players took on the role of a nameless criminal, completing jobs for various bosses across multiple cities. This game was literally built on freedom. It had no deep character development and it only had pure criminal progression. Being built on freedom, GTA had open ended gameplay. This laid the foundation for GTA’s sandbox identity.

GTA II introduced a futuristic setting and a stronger narrative focus centered on gang loyalty. Having still not a single protagonist, the players worked for rival gangs. Their reputation affected missions and outcomes. The big difference was that this time choices mattered more than before. This was the first time that GTA experimented with consequences.

GTA III changed everything. Set in Liberty City, the story follows Claude, a silent protagonist betrayed by his partner. Having a protagonist, this game defined the GTA formula we know today. The game had a betrayal driven narrative and a fully 3D open world. GTA 3 also had strong crime drama tone. People started following Rockstar a lot more when this game got released and this was the beginning of something legendary.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City (2002): Power and Excess

Inspired by 1980s Miami, Vice City tells the story of Tommy Vercetti, a criminal trying to build an empire. This game is legendary. There is not a single person in this world that has played games and doesn’t know about this game. When this game got released, Rockstar was booming. GTA Vice City had an iconic atmosphere. It had a strong personality driven story and Rockstar proved that GTA could tell stylish, character driven stories. This game had themes with a lot of ambition and betrayal.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004): Family and Loyalty

San Andreas follows Carl “CJ” Johnson, who returns home after his mother’s death and get pulled back into gang life. The story of this game is one of the deepest stories out of the whole franchise. GTA San Andreas has a strong emotional core and has to do with family, corruption and true identity. It is just a game that will be remembered for a long time. Many fans still consider this GTA’s best story. Just shows how good this game really is.

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008): The Dark Side of the American Dream

GTA IV introduced a much darker tone, following Niko Bellic, a war Veteran seeking a better life in Liberty City. This game has themes of trauma and regret and truly shows the consequences of violence. This game marked Rockstar’s shift toward mature storytelling and it can be said that many fans loved it.

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008): The Dark Side of the American Dream

Grand Theft Auto V (2013): Three Lives, One City

For the first time ever, GTA V introduced three protagonists: Michael, Franklin and Trevor. This game redefined GTA storytelling and people still play it nowadays. GTA 5 features crime from three perspectives and it has interwoven character stories. The game has heists as a chore mechanic and it is the satire version of the modern American culture.

Grand Theft Auto VI (Upcoming): A new era begins

While details are still limited, GTA VI is confirmed to feature multiple playable characters, a female protagonist and a Vice City based setting. The game has a more personal crime story since it has been hinted earlier from Rockstar that it is a Bonnie and Clyde style narrative, suggesting a relationship driven story with a lot of emotional depth. As it always happens with Rockstar, GTA VI is expected to blend modern satire and deeper character development in a more immersive world.
