Last updated: September 25, 2026 · We’ll post the official number the day it appears on the store listings.
Rockstar has not published the official GTA 6 file size yet. Based on Rockstar’s recent games and current-gen hardware, expect roughly 150–200 GB. To be safe, free up at least 200 GB before preload opens on November 12, 2026.
The “700 GB” GTA 6 file size is fake. A viral screenshot claiming GTA 6 needs about 677 GB (sometimes “nearly 700 GB”) showed an Xbox One listing — a console that isn’t getting GTA 6 — with placeholder data. No official store listing shows a figure anywhere near that.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is around 150 GB on current consoles, and GTA 5 grew past 100 GB after years of updates. GTA 6 has a bigger, denser world, so the upper part of the 150–200 GB range is the realistic planning figure. Physical copies don’t help: the box only contains a download code.
| Console | Usable storage (approx.) | Fits a 200 GB install? |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (825 GB) | ~667 GB | Yes, if you clear space |
| PS5 Slim (1 TB) / PS5 Pro (2 TB) | ~850 GB / ~1.8 TB | Yes |
| Xbox Series X (1 TB) | ~800 GB | Yes |
| Xbox Series S (512 GB) | ~364 GB | Tight — clear most other games |
| Xbox Series S (1 TB) | ~800 GB | Yes |
PS5: buy a PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD (5,500 MB/s or faster) with a heatsink; 1 TB or 2 TB is ideal. Turn off and unplug the PS5, remove the cover, open the M.2 slot, insert the SSD and secure it with the screw. When you turn the PS5 on it offers to format the drive; accept, then set it as the install location.
Xbox Series X|S: use the official Seagate or WD Storage Expansion Card. It plugs into the back, no tools needed.
The official size isn’t published yet. Plan for 150–200 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Yes. A 1 TB console has roughly 800 GB usable, enough for GTA 6 plus other games. On the original 825 GB PS5 you may need to delete a few games first.
Xbox Series S installs are often a bit smaller than Series X, but the 512 GB model has only about 364 GB usable, so clear space early.
November 12, 2026.
About 3–4 hours for 150 GB on a 100 Mbps connection, and likely longer in launch week. That’s why preloading from November 12 matters.
Reports from Rockstar’s Rob Nelson say the console versions currently run at 30 fps; a 60 fps mode has not been confirmed. Graphics and performance.
